Materials Silk, metal, beads, leather Credit Courtesy of Marvel Studios Notes Zuri is a shaman and was a trusted advisor to T’Chaka, T’Challa’s father. For the coronation of T’Challa, Zuri wears this ceremonial dress based on an agbada, which is a long robe that Yoruba men of high stature, including priests, wear. The beading on the front tabard is inspired by beadwork of the Turkana people. The small, textural tubes of purple silk that hang from the garment were added by Carter, in part, to float in the water giving a magical effect while Zuri conducts the King ceremony.</image:caption>

His dress reflects this rejection; he wears simple garments made with wood, straw, and animal skins. Carter was inspired by the Dogon tribe indigenous to the central plateau region of Mali. <image:caption>Film details Black Panther, 2018 Character T'Challa played by Chadwick Boseman. Materials Synthetic, metal Credit Courtesy of Marvel Studios Notes Carter often discusses the importance of detail in film costume. For the Black Panther suit, her focus was on the texture which she wanted to use to visually connect him with Africa. Carter decided to use a repeating triangular pattern as the triangle represents the sacred geometry of Africa. Carter found that, “when we printed the suit fabric, we did this triangle all over it, and it really did make it have this richer, more storied look. So now he’s not only a superhero, he’s also an African king.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Film details Black Panther, 2018 Character W'Kabi played by Daniel Kaluuya. Materials Wool, leather Credit Courtesy of Marvel Studios Notes The blanket worn by W’Kabi is inspired by the Basotho blanket, a garment worn by Sotho people of Lesotho and South Africa. The 200 blankets in the film, produced in Africa, were customized by Carter and her team by screen printing them with Wakandan text and adinkra symbols in silver to represent Vibranium, the precious metal produced in Wakanda. After a camera test, it was decided that the blankets were too thick and not pliable enough. Without enough time to order thinner blankets, Carter’s team had to devise a way to reduce the loft of the blankets. After some experimentation with electric shavers, Carter redesigned the pieces by burning away the natural fibers so the blankets were thinner, but intact.</image:caption>

Carter worked with the Austrian designer, Julia Koerner, to create the pieces using 3-D printing, integrating technology into the the fabrication of the costumes. PARAGRAPH BREAK When T’Challa is crowned king of Wakanda, Shuri, T’Challa’s sister, has to wear her ceremonial clothing including an intricately beaded corset inspired by the Dinka people. Throughout most of the film Shuri wears modern, bright garments that are appropriate for her age and to her work in the lab. Their red uniforms were patterned after the dress of the Maasai people from Kenya and their ring collars are reminiscent of those worn by Ndebele women in South Africa. The armor pieces were designed to resemble jewelry, giving the uniforms a more feminine edge. Carter Costume Archive Notes The costumes in Dolemite Is My Name, show the colorful, over-the-top “peacock” style of menswear prevalent in the 1970s. At the time, new technologies in synthetics had changed the textile world and innovative polyester fabrics, that held their shape and didn't wrinkle, were extremely popular.Carter dresses Rudy Ray Moore in dramatic leisure-style jackets, rich in texture, paired with bell-bottom pants and platform shoes. All of Eddie Murphy’s costumes were custom made using deadstock polyester fabric from the 70s that Carter sourced and then over-dyed. The fabric for this suit was originally a light blue, which was dyed to the pink seen here.</image:caption>

Carter Costume Archive Notes In describing the costumes for Malcolm X Carter explained, "each stage in his life deserved a different color palette since his mindset was different in all the stages of his life. When he is Malcolm Little and Detroit Red, the color palette is playful with the zoot suits. When he is incarcerated, the palette is a blue like he is being cleansed. When he emerges as Malcolm X, there are black, white, and grey notes for his clean, strict, and unwavering devotion to the nation of Islam." This dark suit, was worn during the time that Malcolm X was fully immersed in the nation of Islam.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Film details Malcolm X, 1992 Characters Malcom X and Shorty played by Denzel Washington and Spike Lee. Materials Wool, cotton, and silk Credit Courtesy of Ruth E. Carter Costume Archive Notes The zoot suit was an extreme variation on the full cut “drape suit” of the 1930s. Young men (and occasionally women) in cities across America purchased oversized suits and had them tailored in the zoot suit style: full, balloon-like pleated trousers that were pegged and a jacket with exaggerated, padded shoulders. The look was usually completed with a porkpie hat or a fedora, a long watch chain, thin belt, and matching shoes. No one person can claim the invention of the zoot suit as they were worn by working-class Mexican American, Filipino American, Japanese American, and Black American communities and were rooted in youth culture. In the 1940s, the zoot suit was seen by some as unpatriotic due to the excessive use of fabric during a time when wool and silk were being conserved for soldiers fighting in World War II. This rationale was used to justify acts of violence against zoot suiters, who were often young men of color, and led to the Zoot Suit Riots which began in Los Angeles before spreading to other cities such as Detroit and New York City.</image:caption>

In preparation for the film, Carter consulted period magazines such as Ebony and Esquire and Allen’s personal archive of photos from his time at the White House. This costume, an example of full evening dress which requires a white bow-tie and a tailcoat (white-tie and tails), was worn by the White House butlers for the most formal occasions.</image:caption>

Fashionable men did wear platform shoes, wide-legged bell bottoms, and brightly colored suits. The Fly Guy, played by Antonio Fargas, is an “outdated pimp” who wears his look with pride until he is heckled walking down the street. <image:caption>Film details Selma, 2014 Character John Lewis played by Stephan James. Materials cotton, cotton canvas, silk, wool Credit Courtesy of Ruth E. Carter Costume Archive Notes At the height of the modern civil rights movement, Rep. John Lewis, at the time the Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Hosea Williams of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) organized a march for voting rights, from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, the state capital. As they were leaving Selma, the marchers were met with violence at the end of the Edmund Pettus Bridge by some 150 Alabama state troopers and sheriff ’s deputies. Lewis was battered by a billy club and suffered a skull fracture. Carter referenced historical photographs to create these costumes on view, including this Life Magazine cover from March 19, 1965, which shows Rep. Lewis at the front of the line dressed in suit and tie with trench coat.</image:caption>

While Cooper stood in line for hours to try to register to vote, the sheriff ordered her to vacate the premises and prodded her in the neck with his club. She fought back by striking him in the jaw and knocking him down. Cooper was then wrestled to the ground, beaten repeatedly with a club, and eventually charged with 'criminal provocation'. Cooper was played by Oprah Winfrey, who stated that she took the role "because of the magnificence of Annie Lee Cooper and what her courage meant to an entire movement.” Winfrey was also a co-producer of the film.</image:caption>

The four girls killed in the bombing were Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley, all 14 and Denise McNair, 11; a fifth girl, Sarah Collins Rudolph,12, survived. In his eulogy, Dr. King called the attack "one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity," and their murders had the unintended effect of strengthening national support for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Carter expresses the girls’ innocence through her choice of taffeta and cotton dresses with abundant bows, ruffles, flowers and other delicate embellishments.</image:caption>

Carter explains, "To him it was protection from the elements, he did not know what it symbolized or what it was. It had no relevance to him as others saw it and so it carried a powerful image among the black, white, and gray tones of the film." This headpiece was recreated specifically for this exhibition, under Ruth E. Carter's direction, by SCAD student Eileen C. Kohli (B.F.A. production design).</image:caption>

Jackets were cut-in at the waist with flared skirts and the shoulders were emphasized . Neckwear was elababorate; in place of a tie men used either a stock, which is a stiffened band of fabric, or a cravat which is a soft square of fabric. The character of President Martin Van Buren in Amistad represents a more conservative, older generation. Carter's mood board for Martin Van Buren shows a variety of visual influences.</image:caption>

Carter Costume Archive Notes Radio Raheem’s gold LOVE and HATE rings, produced at the Fulton Street Mall in downtown Brooklyn, are a reference to the 1955 film, The Night of the Hunter. In the film, the actor Robert Mitchum tells a story of the struggle between love and hate illustrated by his tattooed knuckles. In Do The Right Thing, Radio Raheem tells a similar story to Mookie with his custom rings. The scene takes place with Public Enemy’s song, Fight the Power blaring in the background. Raheem’s colorful, hand-painted t-shirt was created by a Brooklyn artist named NaSha at Carter’s request. The slogan “Bed Stuy Do Or Die” hints at the thematic of neighborhoods, belonging, and gentrification.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About - RUTH E. CARTER</image:title>
<image:caption>Ruth E. Carter is a trailblazing, two-time Academy Award-winning American film costume designer, celebrated for her work in bringing to life the vibrant and culturally rich costumes of “Black Panther." Carter made history as the first Black person to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, securing Marvel Studios' first Oscar in the process. She repeated this groundbreaking success with “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” becoming the first Black woman to win multiple Academy Awards in any category and the first costume designer to win for both a film and its sequel. Carter's costumes for “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” are a tribute to the people of Africa, blending traditional and contemporary elements with modern technology. She skillfully created Afrofuturistic designs that honor ancient cultures, empower the female form, and provide unparalleled representation on screen. In “Wakanda Forever,” she expanded her innovative designs, introducing new superhero costumes and the underwater world of Talokan. Tasked with creating hundreds of costumes, Carter crafted visually stunning pieces inspired by both Wakandan culture and post-classic Mesoamerican Maya culture, merging history with imagination. With over three decades of experience and more than seventy credits in film, television, and theater, Carter has worked with directors such as Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, Ava DuVernay, and Ryan Coogler. Her designs span iconic films like “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Amistad,” “Selma,” “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Coming 2 America,” and the “Black Panther” franchise. Through her meticulous costume design, Carter enriches narratives, especially those centered on African American experiences, solidifying her as a preeminent voice in period genres and Afro aesthetics. Her career achievements include Academy Award nominations for “Malcolm X” (1993) and “Amistad” (1998), as well as an Emmy nomination for the miniseries reboot of “Roots” (2016). In 2019, she was honored with the Costume Designers Guild’s Career Achievement Award and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2021. A member of the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Carter represents the Costume Designers Branch, championing diversity in storytelling. Most recently, Carter’s work shines in the box-office hit “Sinners,” where she elevated the film’s narrative through bold, symbolic costuming—most memorably in its iconic dance sequence—demonstrating her unmatched ability to fuse story, movement, and design into cultural spectacle. She continues to expand her influence beyond film, designing Teyana Taylor’s unforgettable Black Dandy look for the 2025 Met Gala and producing a major project on legendary couture designer Ann Lowe in partnership with Serena Williams’ production company—spotlighting the legacy of a fashion pioneer long overlooked in history. Carter's impact in costume design extends beyond the screen and are celebrated in her traveling exhibition “Afrofuturism in Costume Design,” and her book “The Art of Ruth E. Carter,” released in May 2023. The exhibit showcases over 70 costumes from Carter’s illustrious filmmaking career, infused with artistry, offering an intimate glimpse into her creative process and the iconic designs she’s brought to life on screen. The exhibition has been in residence in nine cities and will be traveling from the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Indiana to the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Carter is beloved in her hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts, where a mural of her life and career is displayed at Rebecca Johnson Elementary School. She was awarded the key to the city in 2021 for her achievements and service. Ruth Carter is a proud graduate of Hampton University, Virginia (HBCU), and has earned honorary doctorates from Hampton, Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, and Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Ruth E. Carter’s contributions to costume design are a national treasure, preserving history, celebrating identity, and reimagining the future of Black culture on screen.</image:caption>
